It’s been said that exercise is a great antidepressant and gives you that feel good factor.
When we think about exercise we might think about getting ‘summer ready’ but it is also about good mental health. Studies have shown that when you exercise your body releases endorphins that make you feel good. That’s because aerobic exercise, including jogging, swimming, cycling, walking and dancing, have been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Who wouldn’t want that?
The NHS recommends ‘to stay healthy, adults should do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week. If you haven’t exercised for a while, gradually introduce physical activity into your daily routine. Any exercise is better than none. Even a 15 minute walk can clear your mind and relax.’
