When to start postnatal exercise

Before you jump back into a fitness routine, it’s essential to get the green light from your doctor, typically between 6 and 12 weeks after delivery, depending on your specific circumstances. Do not rush this phase, as your body needs time to recover from childbirth.

Once you’ve been medically cleared, Bluecoat Sports offers a gentle path to fitness tailored for new mums. Here are some key considerations when planning your postnatal exercise:

  • Start slowly: Focus on low-impact activities like walking or gentle stretching. This will help ease your body back into physical activity without overwhelming it.
  • Listen to your body: Pay attention to how your body feels. If you experience any pain or discomfort, it might be a sign to slow down or modify the exercises.
  • Hydrate and rest: To facilitate recovery, drink plenty of water and get as much rest as possible.
  • Seek professional guidance: Bluecoat Sports’s postnatal fitness trainers are experts in providing personalised workouts and simple postpartum exercises that align with your recovery progress and fitness goals.

Why postnatal exercise is important

Physical health benefits

Postnatal exercise is essential as it restores muscle tone, boosts cardiovascular fitness, and supports weight management. After giving birth, you’ll find these workouts aren’t just about getting back into shape; they’re about rebuilding your strength where it matters most.

Here’s why you should consider postnatal fitness:

  • Restores muscle tone: Regains muscle strength and tones the abdominal muscles stretched during pregnancy.
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness: Cardio exercises enhance heart health and elevate your energy levels.
  • Supports weight management: Helps in gradual and healthy weight loss, improving overall health.
  • Energy boost: Postnatal exercises increase your stamina, helping you keep up with the demands of motherhood.

Mental health and wellbeing

While physical health benefits are important, focusing on mental health and wellbeing through postnatal exercise is equally essential.

Engaging in regular physical activity after childbirth can significantly reduce symptoms of postpartum depression. This is because exercise releases endorphins, those feel-good hormones that naturally lift your mood. It’s also common to experience disrupted sleep patterns post-delivery, and exercise can help regulate sleep and ensure you get the rest you need.

As you reclaim your fitness, you’ll likely notice an improvement in your self-esteem. Getting back into shape can make you feel more confident and enhance your self-image, contributing positively to your overall mental health during this transformative period of motherhood.

Social connection

Joining exercise classes for new mums boosts your fitness and builds essential social connections. At Bluecoat Sports, you’ll find yourself part of a welcoming community where you can share and grow together. Here’s how you benefit from the social aspects:

  • Support networks: You’ll meet other mums who are also manoeuvring the challenges of motherhood.
  • Shared experiences: Discussing your experiences can help reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Friendship building: Regular interactions can lead to lasting friendships.
  • Community feel: Being part of a group provides a sense of belonging and community.

These connections are invaluable, offering emotional support and a fun, social environment to enjoy your fitness journey.

Long-term health

By incorporating regular exercise after childbirth, you can meaningfully reduce your risk of chronic illnesses like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. This proactive approach helps manage your weight, stabilises your blood sugar levels, and improves cardiovascular health.

Additionally, establishing a fitness routine early on makes you more likely to stick with healthy habits for the long haul. Bluecoat Sports understands the unique needs of new mums and offers classes tailored to ease you back into fitness, ensuring you build a strong foundation for lifelong health.
