A Squashed trip to Tennis…

Kit Squash Coach

As a young boy, much like many others, I was sent off by my parents for Tennis lessons. Little did they know however, I had my mind made up already.

Whenever a Squash player connects with a Tennis ball, that ball is sent over the net, over the fence, over the net of the court opposite, and eventually OUT.

The British/Scandinavian skin that afore mentioned parents equipped me with was also a factor; about a Factor 50 to be safe…

For these reasons, I would shun a life of potential fame and glory, exotic destinations and multi-million pound endorsement deals. Instead, I would pursue a career in a sport that was created in prison cells by criminals.

Although none of our 6 Squash courts resemble anything close to said prison cells, the humid conditions during our (hopefully) hot summer can make them a little sticky. This, however, does not mean you have to miss out on your week’s workout.

With 15 courts situated amongst the ever impressive Christ’s Hospital grounds, a game of Tennis in the sunshine is always an option.

In my time here I have had the pleasure of working with Club Tennis Coaches Tina Kear and Liz Hatcher. Their Sunday morning junior sessions are always brilliantly run and attended.

Perhaps if I had been welcomed to the Tennis world by one of Bluecoats finest, rather than a bossy old frump, I would have stuck to it.

On days like this, I am envious of the Bluecoats Tennis Crowd.

And if you can’t find it within yourself to compete, get involved anyway; the Pimm’s, Champagne and Strawberries won’t consume themselves.

With Wimbledon, the biggest Tennis Tournament in the world, starting this week, perhaps now is the time to introduce your children, and indeed yourselves, to this great sport.

You never know, with enough practice you might have what it takes to become British No.2
